I wanted a place that people could post their random thoughts on Artists ,Comics or fandom in general. Talk about what you like or despise. Things they would like to see return or go away, trends, just the industry/fandom in general,Or just anything else that doesnt really have a place in the other threads.

I agree. Most how to draw books are so vague that it's almost a waste to even buy them. I found that when i was breaking in and when i first got in, observing how people worked and knowing why they did certain things, the ryme and reasons behind them is what really taught me.
They are a few good ones though but mainly for technical reasons. Mark Brooks likes the book, "how to draw perspective for comics." He used it to help him learn the basics for drawing believable perspective shots and how to place your figures whith in your drawings.

I wish that there were someone in my area that was dedicated to learning how to ink. If they were around i would take out my time to help train them and give them work to do!

I pencilled a few and good lord were they awful lol.
When you first go hired how did you react? Was it a specific piece that got you hired?
Did you show Pencil submissions too, but your inks were stronger? Or did you want to be an inker? I should've concentrated on inking the whole time. D'oh
What was your first printed work? And did you frame it?

When i first got hired by Rob Liefield, when he told me if i moved out to Cali i would have work, I was stunned for about a two week period.
I don't think it was any one peice that got me hired, i had done dozens of sample pages. I guess he just saw something in my work. Worked out pretty well for me.
I had done some pencil submissions, as i was trying to actually break in as a penciler but my inks showed much more promise at the time.
My first printed work was an issue of Blood Strike, and at the time i was so stoked that i proclaimed that i would frame the first pages and hang it on my wall. But as time went by and i did better work i never gave it a second thought. in fact the page is pretty awful. I should dig up and post all that first work.

Yeah post that work! So did you drop everything and move out there? Did he put up new hires in a dorm or something? Or did you have to find a place to live?
I remember back when Image started and how exciting it was. Damn time flies.
Another random thought occured, not one book so far seems to handle the topic of how to translate faces from front to 3/4th to side and back. Must be a giant conspiracy. Also, never buy the inking nor the drawing book from marvel, absolutely nothing usefull in those tiny books.
Yeah the Marvel how to books are so Vague and glossed over i don't know what any one could learn for those after about 15 minutes.
I'll find out who makes a good book that has useful info in it. Something that someone could really learn from.

Well, comicwise, none so far, and I bought a heck of a lot of them :p
Commercial artwise though there are the books of loomis (which also have only 3 pages about face transforming, and badly explained) but are good otherwise.
I'm putting my christmas money and last hope in a book from burne hogarth that is supposedly all about heads, but if friends of yours know a book that explains the concept better, by all means tell me :D

Pretty much, I was just finishing art school and was ready to take my next step in life/career. My Girl friend(now wife) didn't like it as i would be moving across the country.
When i got there i shared an apartment with Brain Denham for about four months then i moved into a Condo with Marat Mychaels whom i had become fast friends with.
At one Time Rob did have a big Condo that everyone called the dorm, alot of the new guys would stay there. So it was like Extreme Studios dorm. I got there after the dorm but the stories i heard where pretty crazy.
You rae right though it defintly was exciting and fun, most people when they break in do alone, hell i have about 15 guys to share it with.

Tell those people from image comics to make a small branch for artists in belgium, so that I can know who to "accidently' meet :laughs: Maybe with a little luck, there will be one guy in belgium with a sweet american-ish style that I could learn from :p

Yup it si brigrade. Man i remember that when i got to Extreme it was right at the end of what was known as the "Glory Days". The main reasons were mainly the insane amount of money some peopel were making for drawing One issue. I mean people made $50,000.00 for 22 pages of work.
Think about that!

Wow that's crazy. Comics were pretty crazy back then with the chromium covers and such. I have Denham's My name is Mud comic that I think was what got him hired. That's so cool that so many got their careers started at the same time.
